Sword of Truth series was a great series...and best of all, it was translated for the litarary impared to a WGN TV Series called Legend of the Seeker. The TV series is into the second season (and second book) Stone of Tears.

As much as I enjoy the series, I can't believe how much they BUTCHERED the story overall. (Jensen from the beginning, WTF?)

It's still enjoyable, I just have to view it as an Alternate Universe.

Yes. This.

Although the book was awesome, I don't think I'd've enjoyed it as much without picturing Cary Elwes, Andre the Giant, Mandy Patankin(sp?), and the others in their various roles.

Also, the author's a tease.

i keep bringing up old threads. i think that's my job on this forum.

anyway, nobody mentioned my favorite series, so i'm going to shamelessly plug.

Robin Hobb's Assassin's Apprentice, Royal Assassin, and Assassin's Quest, and the subsequent trilogy Fool's Errand, Golden Fool, and Fool's Fate (or, as my family and i call them, "the Fitz books", are absolutely wonderful, especially the assassin's books. Hobb is a writer that.. i wanna say she's without peer, but that might start an argument that would rival dividing by zero, so i'm gonna go with most awesomest evarrrrr etc.

the liveship trilogy she wrote, based in the same world, sucked though. gotta fall sometimes.

barring those three, though, if it's got Hobb on the front it's usually a good read.

Speaking of Neil Gaimon, don't forget his Good Omens, with Terry Pratchet. Not "D&D fantasy" if you will, but wickedly fabulous.

Not a big fan of either Lackey or Brooks - probably just caught me at the wrong time.

If you have young kids you can read them the Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander.

LeGuin, Madeleine L'Engle, and Eddings' stuff are all worth the read - although I wouldn't bother with anything after the Belgariad series for Eddings as they all seem to be rehashes from a character point of view. I've really enjoyed the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan but honestly I just want it to be over now. ;)

One author whom I haven't seen mentioned is Michael Moorcock. His Elric series is almost synonymous with old school D&D but I really enjoy his eternal champion series even more (Hawkmoon, Castle Brass, The Corum Chronicles, etc...).

Here's a rather obscure one, Paul Edwin Zimmer. He was Marion Zimmer Bradley's brother who wrote 4 books (The Lost Prince, King Chondos' Ride, Ingulf the Mad, & A Gathering of Heroes). My friend liked them so much he stole the world for an old campaign of ours. :D

Tolkien, however, remains for me at least the master. My favorite series of all I think. And I loved what Jackson, et al, did with the series for the LOTR movie trilogy. I know a number of 'purists' didn't approve but I couldn't see anyone doing any better.

lulz, puck. one of the first books i ever read was pawn of prophecy. eddings and L'engle both get my vote too. though, you're right - he has just been rewriting the same book over and over and changing a couple themes. the Sparhawk stuff, for example, is pretty much the belgariad/mallorean, only a lot angrier/darker/whatever. i mean, Durnik came back.. Kurik, on the other hand..
