I have "new" books and authors to mention here.

Sherwood Smith's "Inda" series. I've really enjoyed it so far, and can't wait for my library to get the fourth book. (Now in Stores)

Winds of the Forelands, by David B Coe was funn as hades.

The Warded Man by Peter V. Brett has been a blast.

Also, I know own the Complete Chronicles of Conan, by Robert E Howard. Quite Awesome.

And the Ravirin/Raven series by Kelly McCollugh is fun.

Another excellent series I've recently discovered is Naomi Novik's Temeraire books - the premise is Napoleanic wars with dragons, which is fun, but it's the characters and plotting that keep me coming back for more. Good stuff.

I'd also like to chime in with the chorus praising Howard's Conan stories. "Conan" is a brand with a great deal of baggage, but the original stories stand very well on their own merits, and I don't know of anything else out there that works so well for RPG inspiration while also being so fun to read.

i'm about 90% sure my girlfriend just recently finished the temeraire books - the main character is a british dragonrider and his chinese dragon who is sort of on loan to the british, am i right? yeah, she loved those to death, but i swear she's part dragon or something anyway.

Yes, that's Temeraire in a nutshell, Tryntu. Give them a try - they are not just for girlfriends and dracophiles.

song of fire and ice needs to release the next bloody book, i'm getting mad at the guy. also, it's awesome.

i started reading the dresden files when they cancelled the TV series on scifi. very sad to see it go; the books are wonderful, though, so it wasnt a loss.

the Ender (and Bean!) series' are outstanding books. actually got a signed copy of ender's game.. and then got home and accidentally tore the cover. i'm still mad at myself.

as for a scifi recommendations, if you enjoy plot lines that resemble the children of pretzels and fractals, Revelation Space, by Alastair Reynolds, as well as the two that come after it, are stunning books. reading RevSpace atm, to be honest.

You'll enjoy them. Very reminiscent of England's War of the Roses - just add the odd dragon or two. ;-)

I like Martin's writing but as Tryntu says above, we're still waiting on books four & five.

Just hoping he doesn't pull a Frank Herbert or Robert Jordan on us & die prematurely. :(

I recommend the both the Dune & Wheel of Time series as well.

I read the first 3 wheel of time books. didnt really do it for me. A lot of traveling...not a whole lot of doing things. And I found myself skipping and skimming through a lot.
